This guide covers how to create and generate a new Secret Key in Stripe specifically for use by Webtron’s new Bidder Verification module.
Generating and Copying your Stripe API Keys
As part of our Bidder Verification module, we’ll need valid Stripe API Keys:
- Your Public Key
- Your Secret Key
You’re limited to 1 Public Key active per Stripe account, but you can create new Secret Keys as needed, this guide details how to retrieve your Public Key, and create a new Secret Key inside the Stripe Dashboard.
Before we begin, please make sure you have access to the inbox of the email address you used to create your Stripe account. Stripe’s verification service will require you to follow a verification link, which must be opened in the same browser you are using to log in to the Stripe Dashboard.
Step 1 – Enabling the Stripe Developer Workbench
After logging into your Stripe account, you’ll land on the Stripe Dashboard Home page. Look to the top-right of the page and click on the Settings icon here:
This will open the Account Settings page, click on the top-right option labelled Developers, then tick the Enable Workbench checkbox at the centre of the page:
If this is your first time using the Workbench, you’ll need to set your Dark or Light mode and then click the purple Continue button. The Workbench will now pop up from the bottom of your screen:
Step 2 – Accessing and copying your Stripe Publishable key
Inside the Workbench, look to the top-left hand side of the Overview tab for the API Keys section. Click the purple Manage API key link to open the API Keys menu:
Inside the API Keys menu you’ll find two tables:
- Standard keys
- Restricted keys
Look inside the Standard keys table for the first row, labelled Publishable key. You’ll find your Publishable key under the column labelled TOKEN.
Hover the mouse cursor over the key, when a small Click to copy tooltip appears, left-click and your Publishable key will be added to your Clipboard:
After copying your Publishable key, paste it into a new email to us (support@webtronoa.com) and then return to Stripe to continue.
Step 3 – Creating and copying a new Stripe Secret key
After you’ve copy-pasted your Publishable key, return to the Stripe Dashboard and look to the right-hand side of the Standard keys table, then click on the + Create secret key button:
A panel will expand out from the right containing two options, tick the option labelled “Building your own integration” (the second option down), then click the purple Continue button at the bottom-right of the panel to proceed:
The Stripe Dashboard will now request you to verify your action via Email. In the centre of the “We’ll need additional information” panel, it will specify which email address will receive the Verification Link, click the purple Send verification button at the bottom-right of the panel to proceed:
After you’ve followed the Verification prompts, you should now see a “Create a new secret key” panel asking you to set a Key name, we recommend naming the new key “Webtron Bidder Verification“, then click the purple Create button to proceed:
You’ll now see a “Your new API key” panel containing your newly generated Secret key. Same as the Publishable key, float your mouse cursor over the key until you see the Copy to clipboard tooltip. Left-click to copy the Secret key, then press the Done button at the bottom-right of the panel:
