Purchase Cut-Off for Timed Auctions Overview

Estimated reading: 6 minutes

This guide covers the Purchase Cut-Off feature exclusive to Timed Auctions and the Marketplace.

Item Types and Purchase Options – a brief refresher

Before we dig into Purchase Cut-Off, we’ll briefly cover Item Types and Purchase Options, as they directly relate to Purchase Cut-Off.

Item Types for Timed Auctions

Timed Auctions support two of our Item Types, those being:

  1. Lot
  2. Listing

Item Type – Lot supports standard Bidding (On the Increment and Auto Bids), whereas Item Type – Listing supports only a Purchase Price and receiving Offers.

Purchase Options for each Item Type

Timed Auction Items (Lots and Listings) support specific Purchase Options, which in turn activate certain Bidding and Buying Options, we’ll break it down by Item Type:

  • Purchase Options for Lots
    • None or NONE – Standard Bidding only, no Buy Now purchase price or Make Offer option (Default Purchase Option for Lots)
    • Buy Now or BUY_NOW – Standard Bidding plus a Buy Now purchase price, enabling Bidders/Buyers to buy that Lot outright for the amount you set under the Purchase Price column.
    • Make Offer or MAKE_OFFER – Standard Bidding plus a Make Offer option, enabling Bidders/Buyers to enter in an amount they would like to purchase the Lot for. An Admin can then Accept or Reject that Offer via the Webtron Dashboard, as well as set an auto-reject Minimum Acceptable Offer by setting an amount under the Purchase Price column.
  • Purchase Options for Listings
    • Buy Now or BUY_NOW – Enables Buyers to purchase that Listing outright for the amount you set under the Purchase Price column.
    • Make Offer or MAKE_OFFER – Enables Buyers to enter in an amount they would like to purchase the Listing for. An Admin can then Accept or Reject that Offer via the Webtron Dashboard, as well as set an auto-reject Minimum Acceptable Offer by setting an amount under the Purchase Price column. Listings also support the Display Price column when using Make Offer, this sets an RRP or Recommended Retail Price on that Listing.

We’ve observed that most Timed Auctions use the same configuration:

  • Item Type: Lot
  • Purchase Option: None

If you would like to experiment with the Buy Now and Make Offer options with your Timed Auction Lots, please read on below as Purchase Cut-Off primarily affects Lots using said options.

What is Purchase Cut-Off and when does it apply?

Purchase Cut-Off is a feature designed to disable the Buy Now and Make Offer options on the Lot Item Type after a specific timeframe before the End Date and Time for that Auction.

As Item Type – Lot is exclusive to Timed Auctions and the Marketplace, Purchase Cut-Off has a limited affect that also only applies to Lots that have the additional either the Buy Now or Make Offer Purchase Options enabled.

Purchase Cut-Off operates on the logic that if no Bidder/Buyer has taken advantage of the Buy Now purchase price or no Offers have been made or accepted, these options should be hidden to allow the normal bidding process to continue for a Lot until it reaches it’s End Date and Time.

Needless to say, Purchase Cut-Off has a very specific purpose.

Purchase Cut-Off’s default setting is 2 Days (48 Hours), which means the Buy Now and Make Offer buttons will disappear from any Lots with those Purchase Options enabled exactly 48 hours before the Auction’s set End Time. The full list of Purchase Option settings are:

  • No ‘Buy Now’ Option (Optional and redundant, if all your Lots are set to Purchase Option – None, the Cut-Off doesn’t apply)
  • 1 Day (24 Hours)
  • 2 Days (48 Hours) – Default setting for new Timed Auctions
  • 3 Days (72 Hours)
  • 4 Days (96 Hours)
  • 5 Days (120 Hours)
  • 6 Days (144 Hours)
  • 7 Days (168 Hours)

FAQ – Purchase Cut-Off

Q: Should I use Buy Now and Make Offer on Lots if the options will just disappear before the auction ends?
A: It’s entirely up to you if you would like to experiment with Buy Now and Make Offer on Lots. If you would prefer each option remains available right up until the Auction closes, we recommend experimenting with Listings.

Q: Are Listings in Timed Auctions affected by the Purchase Cut-Off?
A: No, Listings will retain their Buy Now or Make Offer option regardless of your Timed Auction’s Purchase Cut-Off setting. Listings are excepted from Purchase Cut-Off as they do not feature any Bidding options, only one of two possible Purchase Options (Buy Now or Make Offer).

Q: So what happens when the Purchase Cut-Off takes effect?
A: Both the Buy Now and Make Offer buttons will disappear from your Lots.

Q: Does Purchase Cut-Off affect any outstanding Offers? If I have any Offers pending, will they disappear when Purchase Cut-Off kicks in?
A: No, Offers are valid all the way up until the Lot itself closes. You can still accept an Offer if:
1. The Offer is lower than the Current Highest Bid
2. The Lot is Unsold when it closes (No Bids or Reserve Not Met)
3. The Lot hasn’t closed yet.
Accepting an Offer will immediately mark that Lot has Sold and move it to Closed status. The Buyer will also receive on-screen and email notifications if their Offer is accepted.

Q: Can Purchase Cut-Off be disabled entirely?
A: No, Purchase Cut-Off applies regardless of the Cut-Off setting you choose, but only if you use a Buy Now or Make Offer option on your Lots.

Q: I edited my Lots and added the Buy Now or Make Offer option but neither option are appearing on the Lot, what do I do?
A: Check the Purchase Cut-Off setting by opening the Edit Auction Details menu from the View Auctions page (it’s the blue Edit button under the Actions column) and double-check your Auction hasn’t reached the Purchase Cut-Off point or the Purchase Cut-Off isn’t set to the ‘No Buy Now’ setting, as this will disable the Buy Now and Make Offer buttons regardless of time remaining before the Auction End Date.

Q: The Buy Now button has disappeared but the Purchase Cut-Off point hasn’t been reached, what happened?
A: The Buy Now button may disappear if the Purchase Price you set has been passed by the Current Highest Bid. If it hasn’t, double-check your Lot hasn’t been edited and set to Purchase Option – None.

Q: What’s the difference between Display Price and Purchase Price?
A: Display Price is the recommended retail price for that Listing or a cheeky way to hint at the Minimum Acceptable Offer. Purchase Price is the amount that Lot or Listing can be bought for. Don’t forget, the Display Price column is only usable if your Item is set to the following:

  • Auction Type: Timed Auction, or the Marketplace
  • Item Type: Listing
  • Purchase Option: Make Offer
