OBS and Multi-Stream Explained

Estimated reading: 4 minutes

If you are looking to introduce greater production value to your Webcast Auctions by:

  • Operating multiple camera sources, and/or
  • Simulcasting to your Socials like Facebook and YouTube

Our first recommendation is to contact us. Operating a multi-camera and multi-stream system requires setup and training, and should not be done without at least 5 business days to prepare and test.

What you need – Software

OBS, or Open Broadcaster Software, is one of the best apps out there and it is 100% free.

OBS is required if you want to operate a multi-camera and/or multi-stream system, as it is the tool you’ll be using to organise and switch between your:

  • Camera and Audio sources
  • Stream Keys
  • Virtual Camera

OBS is relatively straightforward to set up, but we highly recommend organising a meeting with us so we can walk you through the setup.

What you need – Hardware

You will need a powerful computer to facilitate using OBS and running multiple streams, get in touch with us and we’ll recommend a Windows or Apple solution based on your budget, but be prepared to spend a minimum of at least USD$2000.

Running OBS, Chrome and multiple streams requires a reasonable amount of RAM (Memory) and VRAM (Video Card Memory), and will make your device run hot.

What you need – Internet Connection

Whilst a basic video and audio stream though the Webtron Dashboard can be achieved with as low as 2MB p/s Upload Speed, for multi-camera and multi-stream, we recommend a minimum of 20MB p/s Upload Speed.

This is because you are operating multiple streams, each with their own bitrate requirements (which also need to be set in OBS).

Streaming through the Webtron Dashboard (via Vonage) uses Scalable Video settings. This will tune the stream’s quality (frame rate, resolution and bitrate) to ensure it remains as close to realtime as possible.

Which Platforms can you stream to?

As of October 2025, OBS supports streaming to the following platforms and services:

  • Twitch
  • YouTube
  • Facebook Live
  • Restream.io
  • Twitter
  • And much, much more. Click Show All in the Service dropdown in OBS for the full list.

Each have their own policy and requirements on streaming.

Restream.io – the Multi-Stream Solution

OBS can only stream to a single selected Service or Platform at a time. However, one of those services is Restream.io.

Restream.io can route your Stream to multiple platforms and services, with the Free tier being capped at 2 re-stream destinations.

Considerations and Limitations

Latency and Stream Delay

The stream to your Portal from the Webtron Dashboard is as close to real-time as possible, this is not the case for services like Facebook Live and YouTube Live.

The best you can expect from YouTube is up to a 5-second delay (using Ultra-Low latency), whilst Facebook is typically closer to a 15-20 second delay.

Resource Intensive

If your internet connection or computer don’t meet the minimum requirements, we cannot recommend you use a multi-camera or multi-stream system. As bids cannot be accepted through other services, your best course of action is to prioritise the stability of the stream to your Portal.

Management and Moderation

If you do not have the personnel to dedicate to running the stream, we don’t recommend saddling the Clerk with the extra responsibility of setting up and monitoring the stream. The Clerk’s focus, and the bulk of their computer resources, should be solely on the Clerking Console.

If your aim is to try and catch more potential bidders through your social channels, we heartily recommend it. That being said, just showing them the auction and not pointing the way back to your Portal usually leads to a lot of confused chat comments on your Livestream.

Copyrighted Content and Platform Policies

We discourage playing any music through the stream to your Portal, not only because it will always sound bad, but because it is also putting you at risk of a fine for streaming copyrighted publicly without a licence.

Platforms like Facebook and YouTube Live are much less forgiving, and will typically mute or shut down your stream if copyrighted content is detected. This may also lead to the termination of your Facebook Account and Page, or YouTube Channel.
